How to Bath A Baby – Top & Tail Wash

You don’t need to bath a baby every day. You may opt for a ‘Top and Tail’ wash sometimes instead.

Like setting up for bath time, preparation is key! What you’ll need:

  • Cotton pads or wash cloth
  • Clean nappy and clothes
  • Warm room
  • Bowl or sink with warm water (37oC)
  • Clean towel

‘Topping’ is washing your baby’s face, neck and hands:

  • Dip a cotton pad in the water and squeeze the excess out. Wipe gently around one eye from the nose outwards. Use a fresh cotton pad to wash the other eye. This helps to stop spreading any stickiness or infection from one eye to the other.
  • Use another fresh cotton pad to clean around your little one’s ears, but not inside them. Wash the rest of your little one’s face, neck and hands in the same way and pat them dry with the towel.

‘Tailing’ is washing your little one’s genitals and bottom.

  • Use fresh pads to wipe the area clean (like when you change their nappy).

Pat them dry with a clean towel and pop them into their nice clear clothes.
